What material is your jewellery made of?

Our jewellery is made out of 316L surgical grade stainless steel and plated with 18k liquid gold. Stainless steel is one of the most durable metals in the world. Its durability is due to a chromium coating that is chemically bonded to the steel and protects it from tarnishing. Stainless steel is also hypoallergenic which makes our jewellery perfect even for those with sensitive and irritable skin.

At Serein we also want to make sure our high-quality jewellery is eco-friendly, which makes stainless steel the perfect choice as it is 100% recyclable.

What does ‘gold plated’ mean?

A gold plated piece of jewellery is a piece of metal jewellery with a layer of another metal on top, in this case, liquid gold. At Serein we use 18-karat gold micron plating over 316L stainless steel. We chose stainless steel base as it is one of the most durable and eco-friendly metals in the world. Its hypoallergenic properties make it the perfect choice for our jewellery.

Gold plated jewellery contains a thin layer of gold which makes it much more affordable than jewellery made out of gold or other precious metals. There is an extra protective layer over the gold plating which makes our gold plated jewellery water-resistant, tarnish resistant and scratch resistant.

Can gold plated jewellery tarnish or fade overtime?

The short answer to this question is yes. Unfortunately, gold plated jewellery can tarnish or in some cases even fade over time. This is common and can happen regardless of the quality of the jewellery. However, the problem is usually not with the plating itself but with the base metal. Some metals are prone to corroding and oxidizing. When this happens, the molecules of the base metal eventually move into the gold layer of the jewellery and affect its appearance. At Serein we use stainless steel as a base for all of our gold plated jewellery. Stainless steel is renowned for its corrosion-resistance and high strength which means that our jewellery will last you for years!

What does water-resistant mean?

Our gold plated jewellery is very strong, durable, and even water-resistant. This means that our jewellery can withstand more exposure to moisture. However, what exactly do we mean by ‘water-resistant’? All of our pieces are made out of high-quality base metal, stainless steel, and plated with 18-carat gold. However, every metal when exposed to certain chemicals that we can find in perfumes, shower gels or shampoos, can cause the jewellery to lose its colour, shine or even tarnish. That being said, our gold plated jewellery is durable, however, it needs to be properly taken care of. Therefore, if you want it to last for years, please follow our jewellery care advice.

Is your jewellery hypoallergenic?

Yes, all of our jewellery is made out of surgical stainless steel which makes it hypoallergenic and perfect for people with sensitive and irritable skin.

How can I know my ring size?
